Famous locals - No.2 Dave Pegg of Crossways Garage

By Maria Varallo (a very new local compared with Dave)

My second famous local is Dave of Crossways Garage that we all know and use, based in a prime spot at the crossroads.

Dave was kind enough to drop everything when I popped in unannounced on one of the busiest mornings of the week, I found out about his passion ...

1. What do you do?

Service, MOTs, repairs and tyre fittings for all makes!

2. How did you get here?

Dave has been on the premises, which includes the car sales and the body shop since he was in his twenties and he's nearly fifty-four, nearly ... not until June. He actually took over the premises in 1986 and has been fixing, repairing and offering an excellent service ever since.

3. What do you like about being here?

"I know everybody here, I'm Histon born and bred". Dave told me he went to Impington Village College as did his father so he knows most of his customers very well, "99% are returning customers and some have been with me since I was in my twenties".

I went on to ask Dave what he loved about the job and he told me since he was fifteen he's been taking engines apart and putting them back together again, "the nicest bit is sending something out fixed and working". Dave went on to say that for some people they find it hard to find a whole day to give their car over for MOT and service. Another way of looking at it is there are 365 days in the year and one day a year for an MOT and service (if there are no complications) should keep your going all year, so one day a year without a car is an easy compromise. May be for some of us that's the day to try and cycle in to Cambridge, organise a lift or car share.

Dave aka Mr. Lambretta has a passion for you guessed it - Lambrettas; he showed me some great photos on the wall in his office (take a closer look next time you're in there). He's a member of The Cambridge Motorcycle Club and the City of Cambridge Lambretta Club - they meet every Sunday morning (10.30) down at the Quayside Cambridge, everyone is welcome!

4. What's your dream for the business?

"To keep it as it is, it can't grow any more and we're constantly busy".

5. And finally what's the best meal you've ever had?

"My Sunday dinner, roast beef Yorkshire puds - the whole works".

Many thanks Dave for your time and keep up the good work!
